Anyone who has honestly explored the literature will find and know that almost all controversial issues are controversial for good reason. There are almost always plenty of sincere and intelligent people grappling with those issues.
Conservative Christianity itself is essentially one big farce because it entails believing that the bible is 100% correct, etc. And it also misleads its adherents by giving them the impression that the bible is easy to understand when it really isn’t. Seriously, let everyone take a primary 6 English comprehension test and probably a large proportion of the population will not get everything right. And the bible is not as simple as some primary 6 comprehension test. It involves a ton of additional stuff like history, ancient languages, philosophy, hermeneutics, textual criticism, etc.
The only way that anyone can claim to understand things well enough to declare that he knows the correct answer to all controversial issues, is to conveniently ignore all the above.
Obviously, life is much easier for the narrow-minded person who simply makes all kinds of convenient assumptions to avoid dealing with his own areas of ignorance.
Each time a person makes a convenient assumption, he essentially insists that “truth” must be compatible with that assumption, and so narrows down (closes himself off to) the possibilities that he has to grapple with. This is what it means to be narrow(or close)-minded.
The bible itself calls us to open our eyes and ears, i.e. to open our minds, so that we may see the truth. But people continually do the exact opposite while pretending that their so doing is pleasing to God.
In the end, it just becomes one big farce.
