Popular: God is preparing a Kingdom of Heaven™ to beat even the best Disneyland® on Earth. God loves you so much and would really love to have you visit his awesome fantasy theme park. But there’s a steep entry fee that no ordinary human can afford. But it’s okay, Jesus Christ is rich af and promises to pay the fee for you, as long as you acknowledge him as your sugar daddy. Jesus has given you so much, so you should do what he says. P.S. if you’re too proud to be a sugar baby, you won’t be able to afford the entry fee, and the only alternative is to burn and rot in Hell.
Real version: God is creating a world in which His authority is respected throughout His kingdom ( = the region in which a king’s authority is upheld). He would like to fill it with people who enjoy His benevolent rule, i.e. people who will happily pay taxes, perform their citizenship responsibilities, etc. (“God loves a cheerful giver”). People who fit the criteria (even if imperfectly, as long as they are working on improving their eligibility: also known as Repentance), will be happily welcomed into the kingdom. Human beings have not been adequately informed of this, so God sent Jesus Christ to proclaim this good news to the world, and teach by practical example what is the correct interpretation of this new information, along with the appropriate response strategy. (This is necessary because humans aren’t smart enough to figure it out on their own.) Nonetheless, many people won’t get / like the idea, and will not respond appropriately. Since God would like to expand His territory to fill up the whole Earth, there is no room for such people, so they will be burnt off like the weeds that don’t belong in a beautiful garden.
Key principle: intrinsic motivation, worth, etc. People deserve a place in God’s heavenly kingdom, based on their own actual willingness and ability to fulfil their roles. Willingness to learn (repentance) is a legitimate temporary substitute for present lack of ability.
Jesus teaches you to repent so that you truly deserve a place by serving a legitimate role. There are real entry requirements that each individual must truly fulfil. There is no special provision allowing Jesus to take the test for you. You must pass it yourself, and Jesus is the teacher who will sacrifice everything to help you pass it.
Part of the good news is that being willing to learn (repentance) is enough to grant you immediate entry, regardless of how badly you currently perform (forgiveness). Because Jesus, being the perfect teacher, guarantees that if you study under him, you will pass the full test eventually and become a fully competent member of God’s kingdom. (Faith = acting in reliance on this fact.)
Sugar baby loves Jesus for his ability to pay the entrance fee to a non-existent amusement park. Jesus’ disciple loves Jesus for his teaching that allows him to flourish under God’s heavenly rule.
Psalm 119:97-176 New International Version (NIV)
Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.
Your commands are always with me
and make me wiser than my enemies.
I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.
I have kept my feet from every evil path
so that I might obey your word.
I have not departed from your laws,
for you yourself have taught me.
How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
